AGRI/CULTURE: Re-Creating the Living Landscape
Last modified: September 5, 2005 - 11:43 AM
The exhibition was remarkable in a number of ways. First, it was the inaugural exhibition of the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery, the region's first public art gallery. Secondly, it was the first time a specifically cultural scrutiny of our agricultural heritage has taken place. The result was an exhibition that interpretised the intersections of a number of powerful themes: from life on the farm and methods of production to changing landscapes, fire and flood, sustainability and urbanisation.
To help realise such an ambitious project, many contributors generously offered their expertise. Much time and local knowledge has been added by a specially-convened group which gathered stories, objects, photographs, artworks and hard facts. This group took on the name, 'curatorium' along with the responsibility that goes with that role: to care for and conserve.
The exhibition curator was Cheryle Yin-Lo, whose work methods are based on forming close links with communities in the creation of exhibitions that touch hearts and minds. She was engaged by Council following a successful application to the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) which contributed approximately $30,000 to the cost of the exhibition.
The kinds of objects sought included:
- Artworks, art installations, sculpture and drawings
- Agricultural tools and equipment
- Books, pamplets, documents & publications
- Personal recollections, audio tapes & oral histories
- Domestic items/objects
- 'Found - objects
- Handmade items
- Letters and reports, film and video
- Maps and photographs - historical or contemporary
- Personal items
- Signs
- Textiles
Agri/Culture opened at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery on 25 June and continued until 4 September.
