A-Z Reuse and Recycling Guide for the Hawkesbury

The A–Z Reuse and Recycling Guide for the Hawkesbury provides residents with a list of alternatives for the disposal of common household items in order to keep valuable materials from going to landfill.

These items may no longer hold a value to you, hence why you would now consider it to be 'waste,' however:

One persons trash is another persons treasure!

Whether that treasure is reused or recycled, keeping it out of landfill saves natural resources, conserves energy, curbs the greenhouse effect, and reduces water usage.

Individuals and organisations must take responsibility of their waste. Throwing out unwanted items that still work is not sustainable and should only occur if all other avenues have been exhausted. Individuals should think about their actions from purchase to disposal – any waste can be avoided or reduced, reused, recycled or composted.

Keep an eye on this site for more updates on drop off locations as they become available.

Remember landfill is the last resort after you have tried to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Hawkesbury residents participated in The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage’s Chemical CleanOut on Sunday the 21st August held at the Hawkesbury City Waste Management Facility.

250 residents surrendered 15.9 tonnes of unwanted chemicals from their houses for recycling and 68% of those who attended were first time users of the Chemical CleanOut. Paints (oil, water and metal based) were the majority with 58% of the chemicals received. Other chemical items collected included oil (14%) and other liquids (10%), fire extinguishers, gas cylinders and lead acid batteries.

The Chemical CleanOut is held annually in the Hawkesbury and is a free service allowing residents to dispose of household quantities of chemicals. For more information and to keep and eye on when the next CleanOut will be, watch this space, visit www.cleanout.com.au or phone 131 555.
