Responsible Cafes

Responsible cafes

Hawkesbury City Council has partnered with the Hawkesbury Environmental Network (HEN) and the nationally recognised Responsible Cafes, who were featured on the ABC TV’s “War on Waste” series to deliver a program to reduce the use of disposable coffee cups from our local cafes.

The Problem

Over 3 billion disposable takeaway cups and lids are used in Australia every year, almost none of which are recycled. This represents a major waste gap with a significant carbon, water, paper, petroleum and chemical footprint. A great majority of disposable cups and lids end up landfilled or littered and can take thousands of years to break down in the environment, contributing to land and marine pollution and threatening wildlife.

The Solution

Council and HEN want to tackle this problem in the Hawkesbury with the support of local cafes and the Hawkesbury community. HEN has conducted the face-to-face engagement by visiting the cafes, explaining the project to café owners and providing the café with signage. The Responsible Cafes platform encourages cafes to provide a small discount to customers who bring a reusable cup and also to sell discounted reusable cups.

To date, HEN has visited a total of 70 cafes which includes all of the local cafes in Windsor, Richmond, North Richmond, Kurmond, Kurrajong and Glossodia. HEN reports they have received a very positive reaction from the cafes.

Responsible Cafes in the Hawkesbury

The Mayor of the Hawkesbury Clr Mary Lyons-Buckett met with local cafes who have registered with Responsible Cafes on Tuesday 27 March 2018 in Richmond to acknowledge their commitment to solving this waste and litter problem.
