Anzac Day is next week and there will be many commemorative services held across the Hawkesbury starting on Sunday, 22 April and leading up to Anzac Day on Wednesday, 25 April. Please see Council’s website www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au for all event details.

I was delighted to join RSL Sub Branch members and Reverend Chris Jones as well as St Matthews Primary and Windsor Public School students and teachers at a special ceremony to collect soil from Windsor War Memorial recently.

The Soil Collection Program is part of The Anzac Memorial Centenary Project Artwork by Fiona Hall which will create a new extension to the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park. The extension will open toward the end of the Centenary period in 2018. The project involves the collection of soil from 1,699 locations across NSW that were the addresses of Australians who enlisted for World War I.

The display of the soil from the War Memorials at Windsor, Richmond, Wilberforce and Pitt Town will inform future generations of the enormity of the sacrifices made by the citizens of NSW on behalf of our country, and form a lasting record of the geographic reach of the Call to Serve.

I know we will all be very proud to have Hawkesbury soil from our various memorial sites included in the Artwork of the Anzac Memorial, in remembrance of the Hawkesbury soldiers who sacrificed so much for our freedom and our country.
