20 April 2017

From the Mayor's Desk

  • Next Tuesday, 25 April is ANZAC Day and on behalf of Councillors and Council staff, I would like to extend to all Hawkesbury residents and visitors best wishes for a safe Anzac Day on Tuesday, 25 April. It is a significant day of remembrance and understanding. My thoughts and wishes go to all of our community members who have loved ones who are currently overseas defending Australia and assisting in other countries.
  • Dumping of household waste on the kerb is the most common type of illegal dumping in NSW and a management burden for many councils. I’ve seen things dumped along the side of the road and I’m sure some of you have as well. Now the NSW Environment Protection Authority has released some new research on kerbside dumping.
The new research findings provide some insights into what motivates people to dump waste on the kerb and some strategies to change this behaviour. The research was conducted with residents, councils, real estate agents and strata managers and to find out more visit http://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/illegaldumping/research.htm
  • The health of our community is really important and that’s why I am heartened to know that the YMCA is offering girls aged 12-19 a 30-day free access pass to Oasis Aquatic and Leisure Centre in South Windsor. They can also access wellness programs from the start of April until Friday, June 30.
Studies show young girls are twice as likely as boys to be inactive and that they experience more barriers preventing them from being as physically active. A lack of regular physical activity can affect your health later in life so this is an important initiative. I’m sure this will help young girls in the Hawkesbury finding activities they enjoy and lead happier, healthier lives. Visit www.australia.gov.au/girlsmove to access this offer - it’s free. Just download a voucher and take it along to the YMCA’s Oasis Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

  • I also want to mention that Oasis Aquatic and Leisure Centre offers great value memberships, which allow full access to all facilities including a fully equipped Health Club comprising of small group training classes, group fitness classes as well as the pool, sauna and steam rooms. Crèche, personal training and boot camps are also available as additional services. Swimming lessons are available seven days for all levels.
