  • Local Government Week will be held in the Hawkesbury from 31 July - 6 August 2017 and we’re giving away 1000 plants to residents to celebrate! Just come along to the Hawkesbury Community Nursery at 10 Mulgrave Rd, Mulgrave this Saturday, 29 July, from 9:30am to midday. Next door you can also enjoy the annual Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day, get a free dog wash and free microchipping for two pets per household - that’s a saving of $53 per pet! Just bring proof of residency.
See the Local Government Week program, as bookings are essential for some events. The full program is available here.
  • Also during Local Government Week, we are asking you, our community members, to make some important decisions about the future of the Hawkesbury. Council is consulting with the community about funding options to help us to meet your expectations for asset service levels in the future. There will be town meetings during Local Government Week in Pitt Town on Monday, 31 July, in Maraylya on Wednesday, 2 August and in Kurrajong on Thursday, 3 August. Please RSVP on 4560 4444. We want you to tell us what you want for the future of our roads, community buildings, parks, and town centres. We need to know if you wish your City’s assets to improve, stabilise or deteriorate, and to consider three options including a proposed Special Rate Variation (SRV).

The annual Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day will be held this Saturday, 29 July from 9:30am to midday at 10 Mulgrave Road, Mulgrave. The Hawkesbury Community Nursery, next door to the Shelter, will also be offering free plants to residents on the same day in celebration of National Tree Day in conjunction with Planet Ark – with over 1,000 native plants to give away.

The Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter Open Day will include animal focused market stalls, a mobile dog wash, Australian Working Dog Rescue demonstrations, and a BBQ. There will also be free micro-chipping for the pets of Hawkesbury residents, maximum of two per household, from 9:30am to 11:30am.

People with ex-shelter dogs and cats are also welcome to come along with their pets and share stories of their new lives. Shelter volunteers will also be on hand to talk about their experiences and to encourage more people to volunteer.

The Shelter covers 1030 square metres with 70 kennels and a large cattery area and services Hawkesbury City Council, The Hills Shire Council, Hornsby Shire Council and Penrith City Council. Shelter staff do their utmost to ensure that as many lost pets as possible are reunited with their owners or are found suitable homes. The Shelter also has very good rehoming rates. The latest figures, using the 2016 calendar year, 1505 dogs were either returned to their owners or rehomed, which is 94% of all dogs at the Shelter.
