Local Studies CollectionThe Local Studies Collection is where you can access a wide range of information about the Hawkesbury district. The Local Studies Collection "collects, arranges for use and preserves materials, both historical and current, in the Hawkesbury area." Whether you are seeking information about the natural & built environments, social issues or environmental concerns or gathering information for family history research, the Local Studies Collection is the place to start. To endeavour to meet the requirements of the members of the local community and of persons from outside the local community in their quest for information on aspects of life in the past and in the present in the Hawkesbury district. The Local Studies Collection forms part of the Hawkesbury City Council Library Service and is located at Hawkesbury Central Library, in the Deerubbin Centre at 300 George Street, Windsor. The Local Studies Collection is useful for both local and family history research & can be utilised during Library Opening Hours and is free to use. Material can be accessed using the library catalogue. Specalised subject guides are also available to consult. Information desk staff will assist patrons in locating sources of information, but cannot do the research for you. If you are planning a visit to the Local Studies Collection, take the time to plan your visit, so that it is more productive. Browse this section on types of materials held, and read the leaflets and check the online catalogue. check out the directions and opening hours, to confirm the library will be opened. You can also email the Local Studies Librarian michelle.nichols@hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au for further information. The Library does offer a Research Service with certain restrictions. Research is undertaken on a fee basis, and only on material that is unique to our collection, i.e. not on items available in other collections. This service is only available to people living unreasonable distances from the library, (i.e. interstate) making a personal visit impossible. Items in the Local Studies Collection are not for loan. Published Books Books relating to the Hawkesbury district on local history, architecture, local families, genealogy and Australian history are available. Books on local environmental issues are also held. A number of these publications are duplicated into the lending collection and are available for loan. Church, Cemetery and Census Records The library holds many cemetery inscriptions and church registers. Most of the records relate to the Hawkesbury and surrounding area. Various musters and census are included in the collection. Newspapers Various Hawkesbury newspapers produced during the 19th - 21st centuries are held on microfilm. Windsor & Richmond Gazette from 1888+ as well as incomplete sets of other papers. The Sydney Gazette and parts of the Sydney Morning Herald are also available. For more information and a detailed list see the Fact Sheet 9 Newspapers. Environmental Impact Studies A large collection of reports relating to the Hawkesbury are held. These include environmental issues, social plans, land use, conservation and business studies. These are available upon request. Check the library catalogue for more details. Newsletters and Journals The library holds an array of newsletters and journals relating to family history and local groups. Check the library catalogue for more details. Photographs The library has a large collection of images of the Hawkesbury district. A grant from the Library Council was obtained to scan & index the collection, known as Hawkesbury Images. The database is available to consult on the OPAC's, the Library's Online Public Access Computers. Microfiche/film Much material relating to family and local history is produced on microfilm and fiche. The library holds Indexes for Births Deaths & Marriages, church registers, shipping, Will indexes, directories, electoral rolls, convict records, publican licences and land grants. Arndell Index to Hawkesbury Pioneers and Mutch Index are also held. Check the library catalogue for more details. Electronic Resources A lot of material relating to local studies is now released on CD-ROM including Archive Books, BDM indexes, Maps and Census data and are available to access. Hawkesbury Images is also available to consult on the Online library Catalogues. Computer bookings are essential so please contact the Library to make a booking on (02) 4560-4460 to avoid disappointment. A Computer Conditions of Use Form will need to be signed by adults. The Internet is also available to access on the Library's computers. The Library's Link page on the Library website lists useful genealogy and family history sites. Maps Historical, geographical, topographical and parish maps of the district are held. Pamphlet file The pamphlet file includes information such as newspaper & journal articles, ephemera, pamphlets, unpublished family histories & research. This collection is also useful for assignments on the local area. Patrons must provide a current library card or sign the Visitor's Book to access the information.
