The work of a fine furniture maker, Darren Oates, will be on display at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery from 10 February to 18 March, 2012.

A hall table created by Darren OatesThe Hawkesbury-based artisan makes extensive use of Australian timbers, and delights in exploring the unique qualities found in Eucalyptus and other native species.

The work reflects traditional woodworking methods of dovetail and mortise and tenon joinery that, according to the artist, give his work strength and integrity.

Best know for his 'parabolae' hall tables, which are widely recognised and admired, Oates also produces exquisite smaller pieces in the form of jewellery and document boxes. Such pieces allow him to incorporate exotic local and imported species into his designs.

‘Darren is one of the region’s most talented artisans’, says acting Gallery Director, Rebecca Turnbull.

‘I’m sure Hawkesbury residents will welcome the opportunity to see his furniture in this specially-curated display, which brings together some of his best work and gives a real insight into his love of Australian timber and traditional woodworking’.

The display, which will be held in conjunction with an exhibition of ceramics by ‘living treasure’ Jeff Minchin, will be officially opened by Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Kim Ford on Friday, 10 February at 6pm. On Saturday, 18 February at 3pm, Darren (who also writes for Australian Wood Review) will give a talk about his design and production processes.
