Launch of National Year of Reading 2012 at Hawkesbury Central Library

09 Feb 2012 10:21am

If you love to read, wish to be able to read, or know someone who struggles with reading, Hawkesbury Library is at your service.

Everyone is invited to join us in kicking off our National Year of Reading 2012 program at 10am to noon on Tuesday, 14 February 2012.

The National Year of Reading (NYR) is about promoting a reading culture at home so that Australians become a nation of readers. One way your local library supports this is by helping readers find new sources of inspiration. In keeping with this aim, Hawkesbury City Council Mayor, Councillor Kim Ford will start proceedings by reading a passage from a favourite book.

Come and share morning tea with our guests who are adding their support to NYR, browse the library’s collection, and of course become library members if you aren’t already!

At 11am, after morning tea, children’s book illustrator Donna Rawlings, and author Simon French will talk about what inspires them about books. Richmond Players will present excerpts from popular novels, while young children will be encouraged to attend a special Storytime session.

The National Year of Reading 2012 is all about promoting reading and literacy in Australia.  It is about supporting reading initiatives; respecting the oral tradition of storytelling; helping people discover and rediscover the magic of books and sharing your passion for reading.  Most of all, it's about changing the statistic that nearly half all Australians can't read with any fluency.
