Hawkesbury Family History Group meeting
Have you speculated where the State's archives are held? Did you know this unique and irreplaceable part of our cultural heritage is located close by at the Western Sydney Records Centre at Kingswood along with approximately 7 million stored items including hundred of thousands of maps, plans, glass negatives, photographs and films?
The material dates from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 until today. Records to be found among the State's archives include records of the convict system, documents which established our systems of government and justice, records of exploration and land settlement. Other material include accounts of great events in our history plus plans of public buildings, from early colonial buildings to the Sydney Opera House.
If you would like to find out more about the "Wonders of the State Archives" come along to the next Hawkesbury Family History group meeting on Wednesday 11 June 2008, at 10am.
Gail Davis will be presenting the "wonders" talk which will look at some of the more "surprising" records held in the State Records collection which can be used for family and local history and some that may be of interest to those who are fascinated by history in general. It highlights some lesser known records which researchers may have overlooked and which may provide a rich source of information.
Gail Davis has been employed as an archivist since the 1980s and is currently Senior Archivist Research and Publications at State Records. She has written a number of guides and finding aides.
The meeting commences at 10am in the Tebbutt Room of Hawkesbury Central Library at the Deerubbin Centre at 300 George Street, Windsor. Anyone interested in family and local history is welcome to attend, there is no need to book and there is no charge.
