An informal information evening will be held at the Council Chambers, Hawkesbury City Council 366 George Street, Windsor on Tuesday 15 July 2008 from 7-9pm for those interested in nominating as a candidate for the Local Government Elections to be held Saturday 13 September 2008. The elections are organised and conducted by the New South Wales Electoral Commission at Council's cost. An independent returning officer is appointed by the commission to each area to conduct the election on behalf of and under the direction of the Electoral Commissioner. Any Hawkesbury resident who is on the electoral role can nominate as a candidate for election to Hawkesbury City Council. Come along for a chat with current councillors who will be available to share their experiences, answer your questions and point you in the right direction to find further information. Learn some of the realities of civic life, the challenges and the rewards. Light refreshments will be provided. In line with the Department of Local Government's desire to improve representation by women in Local Government community minded women, as well as men, will be warmly welcomed at this event. Further information on standing for election as a councillor can be found on the NSW Department of Local Government's website www.dlg.nsw.gov.au. A publication, available on this site, titled "Becoming a Councillor" contains a wealth of information including an overview of local government in New South Wales, outlines the role of councillors , details support that is available and provides information on how to nominate. Nominations for the election close on 15 August 2008.
