Adopt a Road Program

Council’s Adopt-a- Road program is a great opportunity to improve the appearance and safety of roads in the Hawkesbury and enhance the natural beauty for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. Any individual, family, community organisation or business can get involved and  Adopt-a-Road in their local vicinity.

Council is responsible for the maintenance of 720 km of Sealed Roads (which equals 4,824,000 square metres) and 305 km of Unsealed Roads (which equals 1,476,000 square metres) within the Hawkesbury local government boundaries. In addition, the Council is responsible for 25 Timber Bridges and 46 Concrete/Steel Bridges.

Those that Adopt-a-Road carry out regular litter clean-ups in their chosen area of roadside. Two kilometres of road or one kilometre for smaller groups can be adopted for a period of two years. Council provides an Adopt-a-Road kit which includes safety vests, gloves, tongs and rubbish bags and requests that groups carry out at least two clean-ups for individuals and four cleanups per group per year.

What are the Benefits?

  • Identification and reduction of 'black spot' litter and graffiti areas
  • Care for the local environment
  • Increased awareness and effects of littering
  • Improved safety and attractiveness of our roads

Groups interested can read the full details which are provided in the Adopt-A-Road Manual which, when signed, will formalise a unique environmental partnership with Council. Guidelines of safe work practices for the groups are also available for information.

As well as signing an agreement, members of groups are required to attend a safety workshop prior to starting their volunteer service. Recognition and promotion is given by way of placing the street name of the participants on a generic Adopt-a-Road sign.

Council has been involved in the worthy program of Adopt a Road since 10 December 2002 and is grateful to the groups diligently working together on this program.

If you are interested in adopting a road, please read the Adopt-A-Road Manual and contact Infrastructures on 02 4560 4409 to register your interest.
