Hawkesbury Australia Day Awards

About the Awards:

The Hawkesbury Australia Day Awards acknowledge outstanding citizens of the Hawkesbury. Several of the awards categories recognise long term commitment and significant one-off contributions to the Hawkesbury.

Nominations:

Nominations are invited for individuals and community groups who address the selection criteria of one or more of the nine categories listed below. Nomination forms should provide as much details as possible to assist with the judging process. Nominations must address the applicable category criteria listed below.

All nominees must meet the following essential criteria to be considered

  • must be residents of the Hawkesbury or non-residents must have significantly contributed to the Hawkesbury community.
  • have not previously received the award.

Nominations for the 2017 Hawkesbury Australia Day Awards closed on Friday, 11 November 2016. Nomination forms for 2018 Australia Day awards will be available later in 2017.

Unsuccessful nominations can be resubmitted in subsequent years.

Award Categories:

The Hawkesbury Australia Day Awards has nine categories to enter. The award categories are:

Citizen of the Year

Criteria: Awarded to a person who has contributed significantly to the Hawkesbury creating long-term benefit for the Hawkesbury community as a whole over a number of years. Demonstrated selflessness, commitment and involvement in activities in the Hawkesbury. Contributions made by the nominee would be on a voluntary basis and not part of a paid role. Nominees would be 26 years of age or over at 26 January the year the award will be presented.

Young Citizen of the Year

Criteria: Awarded to a young person, 25 years of age and under, at 26 January the year the award will be presented, who has contributed significantly to the Hawkesbury creating a short or long-term benefit for the Hawkesbury community as a whole over a number of years. Demonstrated selflessness, commitment and involvement in activities in the Hawkesbury. Contributions made by the nominee would be on a voluntary basis and not part of a paid role.

Local Hero Award

Criteria: Awarded to an individual that has shown outstanding dedication and contribution to one or more specific areas of the Hawkesbury through either voluntary services, expertise or community leadership that has led to the betterment of the quality of life of others. This service will be short-term in nature and will have occurred in the preceding year of the awards. This award may also take into account acts of compassion, generosity and bravery.

Volunteer of the Year

Criteria: Awarded to an individual for their outstanding contributions to the Hawkesbury community in a voluntary capacity.

Community Organisation of the Year

Criteria: Awarded to a voluntary service or community group for their outstanding contribution to the wellbeing of the Hawkesbury community. Demonstrated commitment and delivery of service to improve the lives and opportunities for community members.

Community Arts Award

Criteria: Awarded to an individual or group that has contributed significantly to the Hawkesbury's community arts development.

Cultural Heritage Award

Criteria: Awarded to an individual or group that has contributed significantly to the Hawkesbury's cultural development.

Environmental Award

Criteria: Awarded to an individual or group for their outstanding contribution and dedication to protect and enhance Hawkesbury's natural environment.

Commemorative Plaque

Criteria: This is a posthumous (five years) award. Awarded in recognition of a resident or group who contributed significantly to the Hawkesbury community.

Judging of the Awards:

Council's Civic and Citizenship Committee is responsible for assessing all nominations received based on the section criteria and select award recipients for each of the categories. The Committee assesses the nominations in early December.

Award Presentation:

Nominee's, nominators and their guests are invited to attend Council's Australia Day Award Ceremony held on Australia Day – Thursday, 26 January 2017. Awards will be presented by the Mayor of Hawkesbury, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett and Council's Australia Day Ambassador.

Invitations will be issued by Council in early January with full details of the event.
