Mayoral Column

At our annual Community Appreciation Party held at the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery recently, I had the opportunity to join our Councillors and staff in thanking our many community organisations and volunteers who our serve our community so well.

The Hawkesbury is a unique place when it comes to volunteering. The census tells us that one in five people over the age of 15 are volunteers in our community. It shows us that the sense of giving back to the community starts young in the Hawkesbury and is obviously a core value that many parents and grandparents are modelling and passing from one generation to the next.

We have 240 wonderful volunteers that assist at our Council facilities, including the Library, Gallery, Museum, Community Nursery, Bushcare and our Animal Shelter. Our community volunteers include the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service Hawkesbury District Health Service Hospital Axillary, The University of the Third Age, Hawkesbury Meals on Wheels, Hawkesbury Helping Hands, Hawkesbury Community Kitchen, Peppercorn Inc., Hawkesbury Neighbourhood Aid. the Secret Garden, Rotary and Lions groups, Country Women’s Association, the Chamber of Commerce, business organisations, town associations, Scouts, Guides, and more. Thank you all so much.

I also want to thank everyone for joining with me in wearing a white ribbon to raise awareness about violence against women in our community. I am opposed to violence against women and against anyone in our community, whether it is women, children or men.

Council has responded to this critical issue in many ways, including t the development of a Family and Domestic Violence Action Plan to implement a range of initiatives, including supporting respectful relationship education to young people, distributing service information cards and displaying ‘Say No to Domestic Violence’ messages in the Hawkesbury.
