Mayoral Column

What a wonderful day we had at Australia Day on the Hawkesbury! Council’s free community event at Governor Phillip Park saw families enjoy free family entertainment and a fireworks finale, proudly sponsored by Windsor RSL, Richmond Club and Hillbilly Cider.

We welcomed 45 new citizens at our special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony at the Hawkesbury Regional Gallery. Thank you to Peter Frazer, our 2020 Australia Day Ambassador. We also presented the 2020 Australia Day Awards, which was a great opportunity to publicly thank our Rural Fire Service and the NSW State Emergency Service volunteers for their ongoing efforts during our bushfire season. I was delighted to present the 2020 the Citizen of the Year Award to Mal Bobrige Deputy Group Captain of Blaxland Rural Fire Brigade. The Hawkesbury has greatly benefited from Mal’s dedication as a protector and first responder when our community members have been at their most vulnerable.

Mal’s passion and devotion to protect and serve our community over the past 27 years has not only saved lives, homes and businesses but he has also prepared the community for natural disasters including the ferocious bushfires of 2019/2020.

Congratulations to our 2020 Young Citizen of the Year, Jesse Wijnans, a devoted youth leader who actively supports our youth community, and congratulations to our 2020 Volunteer of the Year, Diane Sweeny, a hardworking volunteer at Hawkesbury City Salvation Army now for the past six years.
