Burch Photography

Harold ‘Diddy’ Burch was a local amateur photographer. His images captured a period of time that doesn’t seem that long ago, but shows how much has changed. Harold Derwent Burch was born 27 September 1905 in Forrester, now known as Maraylya.

The Burch family lived in Maraylya until the early 1930s however Harold purchased a site on the corner of George Street opposite McQuade Park and the Catholic Cemetery and established a Garage, known as Park View Garage but commonly referred to as Burch’s Garage. He was a noted mechanic.

He was a passionate photographer, during the fifties and sixties, taking many views around the district.  Images on a more personal level are also included.  His father was a rower and Harold was interested in boating and was a foundation member of the Upper Hawkesbury Motor Boat Club, sometimes sponsoring the Bridge to Bridge race.

For a decade or so, Harold suffered with Bronchial Asthma and after a “devastating attack of asthma…he was admitted to hospital where he died shortly after.”
