Leo Kelly OAM Award
We are very excited to share that our Arts and Culture community engagement project, Bangadyi Nawi: Making a Canoe, was honoured with a Leo Kelly OAM Arts and Culture Award at the Local Government Awards 2024!
This innovative project, a collaboration between Hawkesbury Regional Museum, members of the Hawkesbury Dharug community, and Brewongle Environmental Education Centre, offered transformative experiences for local Aboriginal high school students, who crafted a nawi (traditional bark canoe) during an intergenerational Elder-led camp. The canoe and documentary film are now featured in the Hawkesbury Regional Museum, enhancing learning opportunities for the entire community. We especially wish to thank our project partner, Brewongle Environmental Education Centre (led by Steven Body and Erin Wilkins), who supported the project throughout many delays due to COVID and flooding, and without whom the project would not have been possible. Thanks also to Oonagh Sherrard who created the amazing documentary film of the project, Uncle Dean and Uncle David who led the canoe camp, and Jasmine Seymour for her amazing composition of Dharug songs that accompany the film. Final thanks to all the wonderful students who participated in the project and allowed us to share in the learning process - we wish you great things as emerging leaders in our Hawkesbury community.
