Animal Shelter - Hawkesbury Fest

Here are some points on the importance of micro-chipping your pet.

  • If your pet ever gets out and is picked up by a Council Ranger. The Ranger can contact the owner while still out on the road and return the animal home to the owner at no cost. This stops the animal from being taken to the shelter, which minimises the stress levels for pet and owner and also decreases the amount of animals being taken to the shelter
  • If your pet gets out and a member of public picks up the dog and transports it to a vet clinic. The vet clinic can contact the owner and make arrangements for the animal to be collected from the vet clinic. Again the minimises the stress on the animal as it wouldn’t have to be taken to the animal shelter, but the owner doesn’t get charged fees.
  • If your pet ever goes missing or is stolen, you can contact your local council and report the animal as missing or stolen. This way if the animal is picked up by a ranger, taken to an animal shelter or vet clinic the first thing they will see when looking up details is a missing or stolen status. This way they know not to return the animal to anyone except the microchipped owner.
  • If your animal is taken into the animal shelter they will scan the animal and contact the owner straight away to organise collection. This the decreases the amount of time the animal has to stay at the shelter as well as decreases the amount of animals in the shelter.
  • Micro-chipping is not expensive. The animal shelter can microchip your animal for $56.35. This gives the owner peace of mind knowing that if anything was to ever happen, there animal can be returned home.
  • With Rangers, Animal Shelters and Vet clinics being about to contact the owner of a stray it minimises the amount of animals coming into animal shelters as well as animal rescues.
  • Micro-chipping most of the time lasts the lifetime of the animal. Very rarely does a chip fall out or stop working. Again this gives the owner peace of mind knowing that this will last the duration of the pets life. The owner will still have to ensure that if they change any of their details (contact numbers or address) to contact their local council to have it updated.
  • A microchip is the size of a grain of rice which is inserted between the shoulder blades. It is a quick procedure that causes the animal minimal discomfort when doing so and does not affect the animals health over the duration of its life.
