ARTEXPRESS COMES TO WINDSOR

Opening at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in Windsor on Friday, 25 May is the phenomenon that is ARTEXPRESS, featuring outstanding student artworks created for the 2017 HSC Visual Arts examination.

ARTEXPRESSThe Mayor of Hawkesbury Mayor, Councillor Mary Lyons-Buckett is delighted that the Gallery has been chosen for the exhibition.

“The exhibition not only celebrates student achievement, but is a wonderful event that connects communities through the visual arts, and offers us a glimpse into the lives, hopes and concerns of our young people,” the Mayor said.

Gabbar1As Gallery Director, Kath von Witt, explains, ARTEXPRESS is not one, but a series of exhibitions that take place over an 11 month period. The exhibition on show at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery is unique to the Hawkesbury (unlike The Archibald Prize, which is the same exhibition regardless of where you see it).

While all works are deemed excellent examples suitable for exhibition, there are many other factors involved in the selection of works. Each exhibition must include works from both metropolitan and regional centres, and from both Government and non-government schools, with fairness in regards to gender balance and expressive form; meaning that the exhibition includes everything from ceramics, drawing and graphic design, to painting, photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, as well as time-based forms.

“ARTEXPRESS has grown from humble beginnings in the 1950s to a major event in New South Wales,” Kath said.

“The impact of the exhibition has far surpassed its original function as a display of exemplary Visual Arts bodies of work, and it remains internationally unique in its selection processes, quality and scope. There’s simply nothing like it.”

The exhibition continues until 15 July 2018.
