A Dementia Friendly Hawkesbury
Council is currently embarking on consultations with the community to develop a plan for a more Dementia friendly, accessible and safe Hawkesbury.
Council will host two face to face community sessions with community members on Friday, 19 July 2019 at Hawkesbury Leisure and Learning Centre, 114 March Street, Richmond.
The consultations will be of interest to anyone living with dementia, family and friends of people living with dementia, people concerned with memory loss and service providers. The aim is to increase the awareness of dementia and discuss ways to improve access to support, as well as better access to information and services in the Hawkesbury. This is an initiative of Council’s Dementia Friendly Hawkesbury Working Group.
Morning session: 10am to midday - consultation with people living with dementia and their carers
Afternoon session: 2pm to 4pm - consultation with businesses, organisations and services
For more information, and to assist with catering, as morning and afternoon tea is provided, please RSVP to Acting Community Programs Coordinator by email email@example.com or phone on (02) 4560 4489.
Council’s Dementia Working Group
Formed in 2019. the Dementia Friendly Hawkesbury Working Group is a subcommittee of Council’s Hawkesbury Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee. The working group consists of members who are carers, people with early stage dementia, doctors as well as representatives from local dementia services, regional aged care facilities and the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network.
Since its creation, other initiatives of the Dementia Friendly Hawkesbury Working Group have included facilitating Dementia Australia’s seminar on ‘Dementia Friendly Communities’ at Richmond Golf Club on 25 June as well as arranging surveys for people living with dementia and their carers, businesses, organisations and services.
Free dementia awareness forums have also been held in the past by Council as part of its ongoing plan to create a more accessible Hawkesbury for people with dementia, their carers and their families.
The Dementia Friendly Hawkesbury Working Group currently meets every fortnight to discuss the development of the Dementia Friendly Plan with the aim of having a draft plan presented to Council in Dementia Awareness Month, which will be held September 2019.
Art and dementia tours
Through its Cultural Services programs, Council also runs art and dementia tours on a regular basis at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery.
The tours provide intellectual stimulation and encourage self-expression, with an opportunity for participants to share their opinions about the artworks on display in the current exhibitions.
Offered to individuals and their carers, as well as groups, tours are aimed at people living with younger-onset dementia. The Gallery may also be able to provide programs that can be tailored to your group's individual interests and needs.
Art and dementia tours are on the third Tuesday of every month, or other Tuesdays by special arrangement. BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL. For bookings and enquiries about the art tours, please contact the Gallery on (02) 4560 4441.
