Development of Net Zero Emissions and Water Efficiency Strategy

Hawkesbury City Council’s Environmental Sustainability team has engaged Kinesis – an analytics and modelling platform – to develop a Net Zero and Water Efficiency Strategy for Council and the Hawkesbury Local Government Area. The Strategy will provide Council with guidance on reaching its target of Net Zero Emissions by 2050, or sooner. The Strategy will include:

  • Establishing a baseline year to enable Council to measure how its emissions and water usage are tracking over time
  • An emissions reduction and water efficiency pathway listing actions that can be undertaken by Council and the community to reduce emissions
  • Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan clause inclusions to address future emissions as a result of employment and housing growth targets that are contained within the Sydney Region Plan and the Western City District Plan.

The 2016/2017 financial year has been chosen as the baseline to capture all the energy efficiency measures that Council has implemented to date.

Representatives from various sections of Council such as Financial Services, Strategic Planning, Waste Management, Parks and Recreation, Environment and Regulatory Services, and City Design are working together to guide the development of Council’s Net Zero Emissions and Water Efficiency Strategy and to provide periodic data on how Council is tracking against its target.

Kinesis will be undertaking engagement with Council’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, Council’s Waste Management Advisory Committee and key community stakeholders.
