The initial idea for Go West was very broad and undefined. I wanted to curate an exhibition about living, working and creating in Western Sydney, by Western Sydney artists. But as often happens as research progresses and more thought is given, ideas become clearer, more focused. Western Sydney as a region is incredibly beautiful, complex and diverse and yet is often characterised or thought of as quite the opposite. At times, even those of us who live here are guilty of that way of thinking.

Go West as an exhibition thus became an opportunity to articulate and celebrate but a few of the incredibly rich and powerful voices and stories that are Western Sydney (and beyond).

And by chance as it happened, the voices are all women.

The stories in Go West include the experience, influence and attachment to place; the traversing of traditional birth cultures and identities and the complexities of incorporating and adopting new ones, issues of the environment and connections to nature and the land; female identity at the end of the 19th century and a tale of love and loss and death.
