Clay Intersections

9 February - 29 March 2018

Australian Design Centre (ADC) presents Clay Intersections. Curated by Cath Fogarty, Clay Intersections highlights the work of eight contemporary makers selected for their diverse approaches to their ceramic practice.

The exhibition presents the work of Kenji Uranishi, Tania Rollond, Bridget Bodenham, Helen Earl, Ulrica Trulsson, Natalie Rosin and Cone 11’s Colin Hopkins and Ilona Topolcsanyi. It explores how each artist draws their inspiration from the built or natural environment and how they interact with it.  Some artists are from an architectural background, others take a sculptural or functional approach.

Together, the eight artists are part of a new generation of craftspeople and designer‑makers discovering the versatility of clay. Some are setting new trends and engaging new audiences, while others have set out to the learn age‑old practices of wheel forming, casting and hand building, spending countless hours developing techniques and mastering skills.

Lisa Cahill, ADC Director said, 'For more than 50 years the Australian Design Centre has been presenting the work of Australian craftspeople and designers. A lump of clay when combined with the skilled hands of a maker transforms into delicate, beautiful, often functional pieces just waiting to be held in other hands'.

Clay Intersections is presented as part of a vibrant ceramics community in Sydney that crosses paths with studios, educators, galleries and stores beyond the exhibition.
