Alternate views - Penelope Oates

26 July - 8 September 2019

Alternate Views explores Penelope Oates' ongoing fascination with aspects of the landscape both physically and emotionally close to the artist in the Hawkesbury and Lower Blue Mountains regions of NSW.

The landscape is the platform from which the artist moves into a subjectively visual world of suggestions and feelings about places experienced and remembered. Oates' work is quintessentially romantic, as she selectively edits from her observations to heighten the drama of the landscapes which are deliberately devoid of even the slightest hint of human presence.

More recently the artist has felt the desire to include visual references to humanity with the introduction of recognisable objects and introduced species of animals.

For Oates the landscape is not simply there to replicate but to be interpreted and re-interpreted thereby providing the viewer with innumerable 'alternate views'.
