Visit the Deerubbin Centre and recycle your batteries!

10 November 2023

Battery recycling - webDid you know that you can now drop off your household batteries at the Community Recycling Station when you visit the Deerubbin Centre? It is at 300 George Street, Windsor. You can do it when you visit the Library and Gallery!

Did you also know that taping used batteries can save lives and prevent fire? If battery terminals touch, they can spark and catch fire. To prevent this, tape the terminals of used batteries and always use clear sticky tape.

It is crucial to tape up the battery terminals before recycling them through the Community Recycling Centre or through other community battery drop-off locations. By placing a non-conductive tape – clear sticky tape, around the terminals, you minimise the risk of sparks that could lead to fires in collection trucks, or during the recycling process.

Never bin your batteries! When used batteries get tossed in general waste or recycling bins they create a fire hazard and can end up in landfill where they can leak toxic materials into waterways and ecosystems. Batteries cannot be placed in any of your kerbside collection services.

Batteries can contain a range of metals which can be hazardous to the environment when disposed of incorrectly. For example, lithium-ion batteries when damaged can cause self-sustaining fires which are difficult to extinguish.

For further information regarding correct recycling to reduce battery fires, visit Australia’s official battery stewardship scheme, B-cycle at www.bcycle.com.au

B-cycle is supported by the Commonwealth and all State and Territory Governments, is authorised by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), accredited by the Australian Government, and has received financial support from the Australian Government and industry.
