Council calls for nominations for 2026 Australia Day Awards

17 June 2025

Do you know someone who is committed to the Hawkesbury community, is selfless and just mucks in and helps whatever the weather!

Nominations are now open for the Hawkesbury’s 2026 Australia Day Awards – and it’s the perfect opportunity to nominate someone you know who has a heart of gold and makes a difference in our community – no matter how big or small.

It could be through volunteer work, cheering others up with a cuppa, supporting a group or inspiring our future leaders. There are award categories for individuals and groups – and a posthumous award for someone who’s left an indelible mark even after they’ve gone.

Last year’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year, business consultant Sarah Cassim, has inspired hundreds of women through her Hawkesbury Women in Business group, which now has over 1000 members.

She says Australia Day is about honouring the contributions of individuals and communities who work tirelessly to make Australia a better place.

“For me, it’s also a chance to take stock of the values that shape our unique Hawkesbury identity, like compassion, inclusivity and resilience.

“What inspires me most about the Hawkesbury is its heart. It’s a place where people genuinely care about one another and come together to face challenges. The sense of community here is unique - there’s a real spirit of helping a mate and collaboration, and that fuels the passion for community-building. The sheer strength and resilience of the Hawkesbury people should never be understated,” Sarah says.

The awards’ categories are: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Organisation of the Year, Sports Person of the Year, Local Hero Award, Environmental Award, Arts and Culture Award, Commemorative Plaque (Posthumous Award). The winners are honoured at a special Australia Day event where they can invite their family and friends.

Let Council know about a special group or individual before the closing deadline of Sunday 17 September 2025.
