2021 Sydney Writers’ Festival with Hawkesbury Library Service

13 April 2021

Hawkesbury Library Service is pleased to be participating in the Sydney Writers’ Festival once again this year with three amazing Australian author events to be streamed free from the State Library of NSW via Zoom.

Kate Grenville, one of Australia’s most celebrated writers, will kick off the program on Tuesday, 27 April at 6:30pm. Her international bestseller The Secret River is a much loved classic that has been awarded local and overseas prizes, and has been adapted for both the stage and television. Her latest novel, A Room Made of Leaves is historical fiction turned inside out, a stunning sleight of hand by one of our most original writers. The novel is a playful dance of possibilities between the real and the invented, taking as its starting point the conceit that Elizabeth Macarthur – wife of the notorious John Macarthur, wool baron in the earliest days of Sydney – wrote a shockingly frank secret memoir.

Join Anita Heiss, on Wednesday, 28 April at 6:30pm as she discusses her newest novel Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray (River of Dreams), an epic story of love, loss and belonging, set on Wiradyuri country, where the life-giving waters of the rivers can make or break dreams, based on devastating true events. Marking a significant milestone in the Australian book industry, Bila Yarrudhanggalangdhuray represents the first occasion that the title of any commercial Australian novel has appeared solely in language on the cover, without an English translation. Dr Anita Heiss is an award-winning author of nonfiction, historical fiction, commercial women’s fiction, children’s novels and blogs.

Thursday, 29 April 6:30pm will be the chance to see Candice Fox – described by The Sydney Morning Herald as 'one of Australia’s finest new gen crime writers'. Her latest novel, The Chase, is an electrifying cat-and-mouse thriller set in the Nevada desert after a mass prison breakout lets loose 650 of the country's most dangerous prisoners.

Bookings are essential for each event via www.hawkesburylibrary.eventbrite.com or contact Library staff for more information on 4560 4460. You will receive details for Zoom and how to access the event closer to the date.
