Author Tanya Bretherton’s true stories of murderous women
20 May 2021
Join author Tanya Bretherton as she discusses her fascinating book ‘The Husband Poisoner’ which explores the stories of murderous women who disposed of their husbands and other inconvenient family members. This appears to be crime fiction at its best with great descriptions of the people and places involved, however it is based on true events that occurred in the early 1950s.
Of interest to those who enjoy history and true crime, hear about life in Sydney after World War II and the chilling crime wave which saw women such as Caroline Grills and Yvonne Fletcher callously poison family members using the household poison thallium that is normally used to kill rats. Unlike other easily acquired poisons of the time, thallium was odourless and tasteless and victims’ deaths were attributed to natural causes and not nefarious purposes.
This event will be held on Tuesday, 15 June, 6pm to 7:30pm, and is part of the BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival. It will be facilitated by Catherine Du Peloux Menage, Artistic Director of the Festival.
The talk costs $5 and will be held at Hawkesbury Central Library, 300 George Street, Windsor, followed by tea and coffee. Bookings are essential via www.hawkesburylibrary.eventbrite.com or call 4560 4460.
